Papa Roach

“We tapped into that on a track like ‘Scars’ back in the day, and we were, like, ‘All right. Let’s see if we wrote something in a major key again.’ We’ve done that with songs like ‘Lifeline’ in the past.”

Papa Roach’s music style has been largely debated and the band has been referred to under many different genres. These include hard rock, electronic rock, alternative metal, nu metal, rap rock and rap metal. Generally, however, they are simply referred to as a rock band.

In the summer of 2007 the band went on the Bad Boys of Rock tour, supporting Hinder. During the tour frontman Jacoby Shaddix and Hinder lead singer Austin John created a very tight friendship, causing the band to tour with Hinder on multiple tours in later years. It was revealed in 2015 that Shaddix and Austin wrote and recorded a song together for a part of Austin John’s solo project, although the two said they were not for sure if the song would ever see the light of day.

In 1994, Papa Roach released their first EP titled Potatoes for Christmas. Drummer Dave Buckner was temporarily replaced by Ryan Brown, as Buckner was spending the year in Seattle studying art. In 1995, they released a demo at Sound Farm Studios titled Caca Bonita. By this time Buckner was back. In 1996, they replaced original bass guitarist Will James, who had become heavily involved in a church summer camp, with Tobin Esperance, because James’ absence would limit the band’s summer practicing and touring. As Esperance had been with the band as a roadie for a while, the transition was an easy one.

Warner Bros. was not convinced by the demo, however, and elected not to sign them. The unreleased disc included the songs “Infest”, “Last Resort”, “Broken Home”, “Dead Cell”, and “She Loves Me Not” – the first four would later feature on their Infest album, and the last on Lovehatetragedy.

Papa Roach did an amazing job at not only keeping the crowd into the music, but also performing exceptionally. They sounded awesome, the show was awesome, the whole thing was great. They’re definitely a see again. Bands that don’t get the crowd going, don’t tell you to jump and sing and scream and put your hands up, just aren’t worth your time. If they don’t act like they want to be there then don’t waste your money on it. They were very worth the time and the money and the bruises I got from being in the mosh pit. Papa Roach is an amazing band with some really great guys that love what they do, I would most certainly say that they did a great job and that they are somebody I will recommend to anyone in to that genre of music. Loved the show, loved them. I’ll definitely be seeing them again.

The formation of Papa Roach began in January 1993, when lead singer Jacoby Shaddix and drummer Dave Buckner met on the Vacaville High School football field, where the two ended up talking about music. They were later joined by lead guitarist Jerry Horton from nearby Vanden High School (Horton was introduced to the band through his girlfriend), trombonist and rhythm guitarist Ben Luther and bass guitarist “Homie” Will James. They decided to enter the school’s talent show, where they performed a version of Jimi Hendrix’s song “Fire”, but they ultimately did not win the contest. In March 1993, Ben Luther left the band. At this point, Papa Roach were practicing every day and touring, playing every gig they could get. Their first tour van was called Moby Dick, where Jacoby was inspired to come up with his first stage name “Coby Dick”. The band’s name comes from Shaddix’s step-grandfather, Howard William Roatch, who was nicknamed Papa Roach. Roatch committed suicide in 2006 after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The band pays homage to him with The Paramour Sessions and during live performances of the song “Roses On My Grave”.

Papa Roach formed in 1993, when two of its members discussed the potential of a band on their school football field. Jacoby Shaddix and drummer Dave Buckner started the band and were soon joined by bass guitarist Will James and lead guitarist Jerry Horton. During these early days the band played every gig they could get, balancing school with performing. A year later they released their first EP, bizarrely entitled ‘Potatoes for Christmas’. In 1996 James was replaced by Tobin Esperance. In 1997 the band released their first full length album, entitled the self-explanatory ‘Old Friends from Young Years’. Their last two independent releases were in 1998 and 1999. The latter EP, ‘Let ‘Em Know’, earned them a record deal by DreamWorks Records.

On April 25, 2007, it was announced that drummer Dave Buckner would be sitting out the band’s touring schedule due to personal matters. He was expected to rejoin the group shortly afterwards. Jacoby Shaddix later confirmed in an interview with Launch Radio Networks that Dave had entered rehab to “go clean his act up ’cause he was out of his mind.” Unwritten Law drummer Tony Palermo filled in on drums.

Papa Roach was amazing at terminal 5! To be honest, the night kind of got started off slow with the opening acts and even Seether (although I love listening to them, maybe not the best performers). My expectations for Papa Roach were exceeded! They really know how to interact with a crowd and make the get the audience pumped and put on a GREAT show. They looked happy and entertained to play. Would definitely see again!

On July 10, 2014, it was announced that the band will release their new album, titled F.E.A.R., in early 2015. On October 9, 2014, it was announced that the new album will release on January 27, 2015 via Eleven Seven Music. During an interview, bassist Tobin Esperance has admitted that the new release is heavier than previous albums and describes how F.E.A.R. is the first time they’ve allowed other artists to feature on their records.

Despite their mainstream success, Papa Roach remain indie at heart. Their name is an indication of the real bond between the members and the history between them: Papa Roach was the nickname of Shaddix’s step-grandfather, who committed suicide in 2006 after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. The band paid homage to him with the song ‘Roses on my Grave’.

This song is about the cutting and suicidal thoughts of one of the band’s friends. Papa Roach’s “Last Resort” held its ground on the Billboard Hot 100 for three straight months, making it one of the most famous rock songs released that year. With a slower tempo drum beat contrasted by a quick, driving melody, the instrumental composition almost sounds like a hip-hop song.

The concert was phenominal, so energetic, it was sold out so the place was packed. Seether was also a great show. The only issue I had was the prices we had to pay for VIP meet and greet, then we got whisked through, said hi and took pics, then we were escorted out very quickly. No chatting, no autographs, no nothing. However the entire show was so much fun. Read more Report as inappropriate

The band originally planned to release a compilation of acoustic recordings for their songs, such as “Forever”, “Scars”, and “Not Coming Home”, which was recorded for KROQ-FM’s charity Christmas album, Kevin and Bean’s Super Christmas. The acoustic compilation was later shelved. In an interview with billboard.com, Jacoby Shaddix stated that he didn’t think fans were ready for an acoustic direction from the band.

On January 8, 2010, Jacoby Shaddix announced on Papa Roach’s official Twitter account that the band was about to start working on new material. On February 8, Jerry Horton said that he was at the studio starting to write. The band also said on their website that they would be releasing “Big News”.

One of the best concerts I’ve been to!! Jacobi is awesome and the band is extremely appreciative of their fans. They performed fantastically. In This Moment was fabulous as was Five Finger Death Punch. Some of the best performances I have seen and I go to a lot of shows! Got to the venue a little late so we didn’t get to see much of From Ashes To New, but they sounded great , we had seen them previously with Hollywood Undead and they are wonderful up and coming band! Prior to the release of The Connection, guitarist Jerry Horton said in an interview by VerdamMnis Magazine that “It’s kind of a natural thing for us, we’ve always been changing throughout the years. Of course, there are some things that stay the same in our sound but we do like to try new things to sort of stretch out a little bit our basis and therefore make it more interesting”. He also said that the band was going to explore “electronic sounds for the next record”.

“My first kiss was when my uncle kissed me and he gave me herpes. It was terrible. Anybody else got herpes? Yeah, you do. Don’t lie to yourself. I know you got it, you watching this,” he added.

Well, of course at the time we were listening to a lot of Wu Tang Clan, a lot of hip-hop, and a lot of Fugees and a lot of East Coast hip-hop…I was playing something on piano and Jacoby came in and started scatting over it. And we just did our typical mixing of a funky kind of hip-hop groove with a punk rock chorus. We did it over and over again, and Jacoby put his lyrics to it, and the song just morphed into what it is now. No one ever thought it was going to be a huge, huge hit, but I guess you never expect anything, really, when you’re first starting out.
